PSE 101: Lightening a Dark Photo

Sometimes you get an image with too much backlighting, like this photo of my daughter in front of an airplane window. It’s possible to bring back enough detail to save a photo that, in the days of film, might have been tossed into the trash.

Go to Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Shadows/Highlights, and adjust sliders; typically a dark photo with backlighting benefits from lightening shadows AND darkening highlights.

If the image is now washed out, Ehance>Lighting>Contrast can often improve it further.

Voila! A previously unusable image can be brightened up to at least a web-suitable quality.
